The Fundamental Issue For Our People, Then as NOW
TR defines this as the question, "Are the American People fit to rule themselves, govern themselves, control themselves? He answers his own question in a rousing yes!, and then goes about proving his point and expanding his philosophy (
and ours-ed)....."that the majority of plain people of the United States, will day in and day out, make fewer mistakes than any smaller class or (
elilte my addition) body of men, no matter what thier training"...And of course this is the fundamental difference between we, and the left. The left's ferverent belief in rule by the elite (as defined by themselves, of course) and our unshakable conservative faith in the PEOPLE to rule themselves. We have been struggling over this since the founding of the republic, as so well shown here, and in almost every speech made by then former President and canditate for President of the Progressive party, Theodore Roosevelt.
Unreasonable Conservatism and Unreasonable Radicalism. When you listen to this recording, you will swear that Mr. Roosevelt is speaking from the grave directly to us, in our time. He defines and then expands upon his fundamental them, of the plain people fully able to govern themselves. He gives "our sister republic" of France as an example, stating that all of her woes for the last 150 years are due to the entrenchment of her politics into either unreasonable radicalism or unreasonable conservatism. He justifies his own challenge to the GOP, by stating that when conservatives stray from following the light of rule by the people, then it must be opposed. He charges that the left and right, altho small differences my remain between them, unite with eachother, as fellow elites, to viciously oppose the rule of the common people by themselves as opposed to those same elites. It is my opinion that President Bush is dangerously close to becomming this type of conservative who strays from that light. Indeed, he has crossed the line now several times into the rule by elite. Novak writes that the white house is now portraying the fight over Mrs Miers as the Bush Presidency failing if her nomination does. I say, that it shall fail, unless the President and his people again start folling the beliefs and righteousness that we all fought so hard for to get him elected.

Elites vs the rest of us. TR again expounds upon the them of the people having the right to rule themselves, this time adding real world examples. Now elements of Big Business, and the elites from the left and the GOP ally to attack him. In this case Sen Penrose and a Mr. Archibald of Standard Oil Co. He lambasts them for testimony into the enforced breakup of the Standard Oil monopoly by TR and the then GOP. He condems them for bringing charges against one of Roosevelts key players in this, years after the man died. Roosevelt points out that the man lived for 7 years after the event, but the elite waited until after he died, thus unable to defend himself, to bring any charges. They also claimed brutal treatment by Roosevelts administration, to which Roosevelt answers that yes, not only was it brutal, but if Standard Oil acted in such a fashion, He would treat them so again! Sounds like Bush his first 2 years in office. Had it sounded like Bush the last 3 years, there would be no problems at the white house right now. Our President needs to change course....he needs to veer away from becoming another Taft, and move towards becomming another TR!

A Square Deal for EVERYBODY. Here, speaking befor the Boy's Progressive League, he defines the right of the people to rule themselves, in the context of a "square deal" for every man and every woman in the United States....Politically, Socially, Economically. When listening to him addressing the boys, keep in mind that women did not yet have the right to vote. In keeping with fundamental conservative philosophy, this was unacceptable.
